Its that time of year again!  The end of July, when everyone is drenched with the heat, and ready for a little bit of the crisp taste of Fall.  Its fantastic when families contact me months in advance to schedule their sessions.  As of right now, I have several weekday spots, but only one remaining weekend spot available in November!  For families who haven’t yet begun to consider the timing of their annual portraits, Fall is a gorgeous time here in Charlotte.  The leaves turn, and the humidity drops to comfortable levels in November (I still wouldn’t plan on heavy sweaters, though!).

My approach with a family photography session is to devote about 15 minutes of our time for more traditional ‘posed’ images, where everyone is looking at the camera.  The rest of our time is more casual and playful- authentic smiles and connections are the best.  Happy and relaxed parents = happy and relaxed kids, so I do my best to keep the mood casual and fun!  Bring your pets if you like, a favorite blanket, and trust me to capture your beautiful selves 🙂

One of the questions I get asked frequently (and a question I ask myself, when I schedule portraits with my own family): what should we wear?  Keep it classic, comfortable, and appropriate to the season/temperature.  Solid colors in complimentary tones (no matchy-matchy), pops of color or pattern, and for Charlotte temperatures, keep the layers light so you don’t feel like you’re sweating through your shirts (men).  In our family, I have the easiest time finding cute clothes for my children, so I usually end up picking favorites for them, and building the rest of our wardrobe from there.

For inspiration, check out my Pinterest ‘What To Wear‘ board.  This session from last Fall is a great example of easy colors and patterns that were complimentary, and comfortable for this family.   A quick change of shirt is also a great way to add variety to a family portrait session!
