Freelensing 365 : A year of creative photography, with Jamie Lucido
Daily shooting is a big deal to me, I’ve been religious about personal 365 projects for years now, and can’t say enough about how those years have helped shape my approach to photography. Its been about 6 months since I began this year’s theme and I’ve got to say, halfway in, purposeful daily practice removing the lens from my camera has been good for my soul.
I love tack-sharp images and the security of a predictable plane of focus as much as anyone. My Sigma Art35 and Canon 100mm macro lenses are still my go-to/control-freak favorites for exactly those reasons (check out last year’s Macro 365 project, for lots of sharpness with those lenses!). I keep my lenses firmly attached to my cameras during client sessions and events, but on my own time, letting go of the expected plane of focus and playing with the more spontaneous and magical results of freelensing has been an exercise in freedom and creativity.
I’ve been using an old 50mm for these, and have freelensed in all kinds of situations, but my favorite places so far have been in the bathtub and at the beach… (thank you, Canon Professional Services, for your help with dust and water on my sensor!) My subjects are my own little munchkins during the regular course of our day, no posing or direction from me, purely documentary. This blog is an example of one random afternoon at the park with the kids this week.
As I become more busy with sessions and weddings, freelensing inbetween has become even more important- it keeps me curious and excited about the more abstract and creative aspects of photography, in love with my equipment, and wondering what tomorrow will bring. I’m becoming more and more sure of what I’m going to get during a regular session, but freelensing is still a box of mysterious and delightful chocolates 😉
If you’re a free lenser, curious about freelensing, or want to chat more about it, I’d love to hear from you! #thefree52project
