Documentary Photography | Charlotte Photographer, Jamie Lucido
I fell in love with documentary photography several decades ago. Those surprise moments that make you feel something. That tell the story of a place, a time, a person.. Long before I ever picked up a camera of my own, I devoured documentary films, books, and images. I love the perfectly captured moment just as much as anyone, but pure documentary- where the photographer does not direct the scene at all, and captures the story of the moment cleanly and elegantly- its almost magic.
Once I became a parent, I knew that I would enjoy documenting everyday life with the kids. But I didn’t realize how much it would move me. I keep several cameras staged around the house, in case I walk in on a scene I want to remember, and I shoot every day. In that way, I’ve begun a collection I hope to one day give to my children so that they can see their childhood as I did.. one beautiful, messy, joyous leap of faith.
Sharing some favorites here.. my kids are mostly oblivious to me holding a camera, but sometimes they’ll look directly at me when they’re in the midst of something, and I’ll capture that too. I choose moment over consistent lighting patterns, or personal comfort zone. These were taken at all times of day and location, so these all look different from each other, but taken as a whole, they’re a pretty good summary of our days. <3
Do yourself and your children the service of capturing everyday life. 365’s are where it’s at. A large body of work, capturing the messy, the imperfect, real life as it happens. Get it with your cell phones, your ‘real camera’, whatever you’ve got- just get it. Because those are the moments that will make you laugh in 10 years. Those are the ‘good old days’, as they really were. They are priceless.
